Posting pictures from computer.

I've been trying to post some pictures and keep getting the same messages. Messages about the pictures being too large.
How do I make the pictures take up less space or do I need to take pictures with a digital camera? I think I'm following the correct procedure for posting. 
Is it equipment or operator error.

Resize the picture with photo editing software
May have the ability with what is already on your computer.

I resize to 900 x 675, works ok for me.
