I did once have to perform surgery on a couple of cheapo hollow-core door slabs. They were new ones. Two doorways in my old house were shorter than normal due to framing out for vents in that hallway. It was just enough that it would have gone through all of the solid material on the bottom. So I made the cut, used the tablesaw to "trim" off the surface on the piece I removed, and glued and nailed that piece back into the door. After it dried, I sanded, routed a chamfer, and painted. It worked out fine and was much cheaper than ordering a custom door.
