Thanks.  That is a thought.  what's on the other side of the wall for me is a bedroom wall so something like that you would see.    I never thought of drywall as structural, but I guess it could hold anchored like that.

I'll share a story with you. For what it's worth. We both know screws into studs is best, but......

When we moved into our house in 1987, I was carrying stuff down the stairs. I slipped, grabbed the hand rail, and the bottom anchor ripped right out of the wall. Whoever installed it has used a plastic wall insert for the bottom bolt, as there was no stud at the correct location. The top bolt did go into a stud.

I fixed it with a piece of threaded rod through the wall, (into the garage) culminating on an electrical plate as a wide washer similar to what I showed. 

It's been like that for 37 years, and I grab that railling every day when using the stairs.
