I'll be building a desk with some Ebony pegs etc. At the base I plan a pair of beads all the way around. These would look best in Ebony but the cost is pretty high so I'm thinking of faking it there. Maple stained black then probably with a coat of thin black paint. I have to get into the shop and make some samples but thought someone here will have some pointers.

I can't help you with faking it but I might be able to sell you some ebony at a cheap price. What size are the beads?

african blackwood is a close fake. The tiny amount of wood you are taking about for pins would be an insignificant cost.
