Veritas shooting sander

I can't tell by looking at the images in the catalog, but it appears that this device will eventually sand away the wall on a shooting board. I am pretty certain that this is not the case- can someone explain how it works?

The sandpaper is inset ever so slightly from the edge of the block itself that runs along the edge of the shooting board?

Edit - Yep... Taken from LV'S website...
