I think in place of a nut, i would use a piece of pvc, cut to whatever length needed and slipped over to tool rest post.

PVC, UHMW, Wood whatever a person uses will work and have a few sizes.  I know I used to have a lot of trouble trying to keep the rest from slipping down to far when trying to adjust it and others may have the same problem and this and adding the other stuff fixes that to me anyway.
