Eastern Red Cedar as fence?

They saw a lot of ERC around here and we (or at least SWMBO 
 ) want a 6' wood fence for the back yard.

My thoughts are horizontal pieces of 1"x6" nailed to wood posts.  Simple and ~elegant?~ 

But how long will Cedar last if we stain it every 5 years or so?

Would Oak last longer?  Enough longer to justify the extra cost?
(Haven't got current prices yet so not sure how much the cost difference is)

Anyone have any experience with either?  Got a better suggestion???

A close friend has the family farm. It has cedar posts on woven wire. These fence posts have been in the ground for 60 plus years. I talked him out of a couple for turning and when we pulled them they were just like the day they were put in. The tops showed weathering but still solid.

I installed a cedar picket fence with black locust posts and rails many years ago.  I believe the pickets lasted 40+ years and the posts are still there.
I was 19 years old then , so it was 58 years ago.
White oak is also a good choice. Red oak will rot in less then 2 years .
