I used to use CA finish, but it made too much of a mess when I used it on bowls. It did teach me that I was standing in the wrong place when the spatter got on my face shield.
I switched to walnut oil. That has worked well for me except for one artist's pencil where the pen blank was not as dry as it should have been. On that one, it split the next winter when the humidity stayed very low in my office for weeks. I have thought about whether or not a film finish would have prevented the splitting.
