Could you do about the same thing on a lathe using a parting tool?

Wild Turkey said: Possibly. I had a ringmaster for a time. It cuts at a precise angle EVERY time, that would be hard to duplicate with a parting tool, especially on something like that. Also, it cuts a fairly narrow kerf and a parting tool would almost for sure bind up. I sold mine after a bit because to me all of the bowls looked the same, kind of a funnel shape. To do something like vase requires a lot of experience.

You can do the same thing with a scrollsaw or bandsaw, eg
http://www.amazon.com/Wooden-Bowls-Scrol...1565234332 The Ringmaster jig seems pretty fast, but limited to circles. With a sawn stacked bowl you can make whatever ring-shape you want, e.g a 5-lobed ring. -Mark
If I had a signature, this wouldn't be it.
