Saw rehab,1 for 2

Found a Moving Sale Friday morning, and picked a pair of saws......was aware they were "Gold-plated"  $18 for the pair?
 

   
One did look decent enough.....the other was even close...but it will provide parts......a handle and a couple saw nuts
Took the handle off, and found..

   
Out why only two bolts matched up....Saw plate was badly pitted, as well.  Turn my attention to saw #2
Got the bolts removed, and shined up

   
Handle was removed, sanded to remove the flaky, old finish..

   
Set these aside, and worked on getting the plate cleaned up

   
Since that was 5 photos, I'll have to do a "Part 2"

Ok, I used a 1/4 sheet sander to clean the saw plate
 

   
Once both sides were cleaned up..

   
I also wiped on a couple coats of Amber shellac onto the handle, and put things back together..

   
I even clocked the screws' slots
 

   
This saw is a Disston D-112..
..26" long, skew backed, 7ppi, crosscut filed saw.    Test cuts?
 

   
Does not need sharpened.   Them teeth are VERY sharp
 

Might have been worth missing breakfast?

Good score on the saw with a GREAT cleanup after. That one looks like a good user, indeed.

Maybe with the crappy saw plate you can make some good hand scrapers.

Cut the 2" off the heel, to remove all those extra holes....added a spare handle that seemed to look better....
 

   
Only to find it was cracked..
 

I do have a similar handle..hopefully it isn't cracked....
Plate is black from all that "patina"   and a rub down with 3in1 oil, to stop any more rust.   The wood block?    Saw sits in a kerf the saw had made....makes a nice little display stand
 

May at some point try to re-do the nib?    Tooth length is 24", and is a 8ppi crosscut.    Might make it a Panel saw....

Nice set o' saws!

The Atkins, I would bet, is a No. 51; the screw pattern matches that better than it does the 53/58/59 saws.   A real fine saw; my go-to rip saw is a No. 51.   Lots of those old ones lost the nickel-plating on the screws over time.
