Shouldn't there be one more spindle at each end?? To my eye it looks like it is missing those.
But "to each, his own". If you're happy then I'm happy.
You could absolutely do that: I chose to stick to the original plan.

Kudos to you
I was perplexed by that too initially. The compound mortise/tenon joint for the legs makes for a very sturdy structure and I think Mr. Becksvoort determined that the stretchers were not necessary. I'll let you know if/when this bench collapses.

Hi Phil,
This came out beautiful, I really should visit this section more often.
Looks like there were no hick ups in the building and the bench looks comfortable.
Zje only thing I wonder about is the postion of the outer legs.
My eye would like them to be closer to the ends.
Cheers

Pedder:
Thanks for the kind words. There were no major problems during the build I am happy to report. The bench is comfortable enough although it's really more of an accent piece in our house, although who knows how future generations will use it.
As far as the leg position: I was happy with the way Mr. Becksvoort had laid them out, although I did modify the shape of the seat slightly (from his original plans) to make it slightly more rectilinear. I am generally in agreement with Christian's shaker aesthetic. When I build another one of these (not any time soon) I will have to experiment with the leg position.
