Ballast magic tar

I guess if motors can have magic smoke then a Ballast has magic tar. when it leaks out the ballast quits. already replaced it just curious what actually happened inside?

well for one thing it got really really hot.....

Took all my ballasts out and chucked them. Bought LED tubes from Amazon. Cut out some wires, they just need black and white at one end. Daylight color temp. I like them.
