The Fletcher Capstan Table

I know this table comes up for discussion every now and then, but this is the first time I saw this video explaining the manufacture and inner workings of the version made by Fletcher Burwell-Taylor.

Arguably some may say it is more engineering than woodworking, but the craftsmanship is admirable nonetheless.

Wooden engineering intrigues me, not only do the parts, both wooden and metal need to be skillfully made so as to work, and mesh together perfectly. Then the engineering itself is worthy of applause. I'm in awe of people who can do this, many would say nothing to it, but only a handful could. Neat post

You gotta love those tables....

Nope. I had to (try to) repair one of those monsters once. No way to get the parts to align. You pulled a lever one way to open it up, then pushed another way to get it to lock together. Gears and struts everywhere.

I was reminded of a few quotes:
* Everything Should Be Made as Simple as Possible, But Not Simpler.

* A $5 solution to a 50 cent problem.

* A solution looking for a problem.
