Just ran across this and it piqued my interest.  Why would this plane start out bidding at ten bucks and get raised up to $600?  Is it the age of the plane or the uniqueness of it?

Or is W. Butcher a desirable plane?

Butcher made the iron. The plane was made by someone else, who, I don't know, but the old tools cognoscenti appear to know, hence the high price.

The ability to adjust the opening seems unusual.  Perhaps that's the attraction? Three bids in the last 10 seconds reaching $1,375! At least three people know.

They were just getting warmed up at $600.  Sold for almost $1,400.  I was curious and it looks like a J. Popping Miter plane.  If so, it seems that it may have been a bargain.

It does look like a J. Popping. And the lever cap knob was purchased from L. Bailey. Nice plane except for the chip in the mouth. Hefty price but you need this plane if you are making a piano.

It was obviously worth the bux to some people. I like watching and occasionally buying, sometimes selling tools on the bay. Lately seen a sweet  buy-it-now deal too. The owner didn't know what he had there. Just wish I'da seen that one a bit quicker.

Now that I've left the work-a-day world behind, it takes a bit longer for the brain to boot up.  Unless I'm missing something, isn't $100-ish for a Stanley 51 outfit "you suck" worthy?  Heck, maybe this guy (sorry, jasfrank-don't know your name)  should even be arrested for theft.

Hey Admiral you have any idea about what a Wisner is worth and why?

IIRC, that was the predecessor company Tom Lie Nielsen took over back in the day.  That would make his stuff collectible for some people; never fondled one, no idea of value.

Why is a W. Butcher plane so expensive?
