Knock down hardware source?

Folks, I can picture in my head what I need, but can't figure out what it's called so that I can find a supplier.  

I need the wide-head screws that are typically Allen key driven, and the threaded inserts you drill a hole for and then screw them in.

Install the insert, say, into end grain, drill a hole through the face of the piece that attaches to it, and run the screw through.

Please help!

Also seen the bolts called joint connector bolts or connector bolts.  

I found Menard's had the best availability on cross dowels.  They had the 1 1/2" long 1/4-20 cross dowels that I wanted.

Tage Frid described a way to use those bolts in conjunction with T-nuts for knockdown furniture. He install the T-nut in a blind hole by drilling a clearance hole down the center of a dowel, installing the T-nut in the end of the dowel, and gluing the dowel into a blind hole with the T-nut trapped inside. The trick is to orient the work while drying so glue does not drip into the threads.

That hardware is fairly expensive if you buy it from Woodcraft, Rockler, or from the Big Box stores.  Also, the Big Box stores don't carry the 3" bolts.  I got mine from Fastenal.  Another source is The HardwareHut (thehardwarehut.com). The barrel nuts (cross dowels) are somewhat standard for any type of bolt.  In a pinch, you can temporarily make a bolt from 1/4-20 threaded bolts and use a washer on one end.  Those you can buy from the bulk bins at the Big Box stores.
