I find it interesting that a lot of videos like this one imply that the craftsmen of the past may not have been able to figure out techniques that result in more efficient processing of material just because they were working by hand. I would think that working things by hand would lead them to more efficient techniques so there is less manual work to be done. Also if they are doing this work all day every day, they are going to develop better methods just by trial and error.
