Building a trophy case...how to make a "push pin" board?

Building a trophy case for the neighbor's kid.  The upper section will be 2 glass "towers"  (glass on 3 sides with glass shelves).  Between them the kids wants it to be a board where he can use pins to hand/attach things.  2 questions:

1) How would you build this section?  It'll need some padding behind the fabric to "grab" the push pins.  Should I use cork?  How thick should it be?  if not cork, what material would you recommend?

2) What's the best fabric to cover it with.  Something close-knit I presume the aid in the "grabbing strength" of the pins.

I would use a cotton fabric.

I have used the Homasote board too, it works great  you can also get it at Menards in a handipanel 2x4. pull the fabric to the back and staple, holds great.

Cork seems to work better than any other material for this purpose.  Grainger carries cork in both sheet form and roll form.
