[attachment=25389]I've had this a number of years and it always has that smell that electrical motors make sometime. I think its ozone. I looked into the motor and notice some sparks coming from the brushes/commutator.

I pulled the brushes and there is lots of life left but they look like they are wearing a little oddly. One had a dark spot.

Also, I noticed that the safety brake does not always work. I think that this is just repulsion braking and is just caused when the motor is shut off.

I'd like to pull the motor and inspect things/clean the commutator. I wish there was a way to get a brush seating stone in there to help seat things better.

There are 4 screws that hold the motor on. There must be electrical connections there as well. 

Is it fairly straight forward to just remove the 4 bolts and then see what else to disconnect?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Before you tear it apart try removing the brushes, clean the inside of the brush holders, and sand the brushes a little and see how it works.  Make sure the brushes slide in and out of the holder easily.   See if the braking and sparking are better.   Also blow out the switch. Roly
