I've lurked in the Turner Forum in the past but lately I've been doing a lot more turning in my tool work. Chisel handles (Desert Ironwood)  and the heads of awls (Olive and infused curly maple) have been the fare lately.

Beautiful work. I haven't been in my shop in 3 months due to a fractured vertebrae. Hoping to get in there soon

Nice Job Ron............
As of this time I am now teaching vets again.  If you have any lumber scraps we can use them to glue up to make some bowl from a board.  Thank You

It is always the right time, to do the right thing.

What's the purpose of the little nicks in the shaft of the awl?  Better grip?

It's really just for visual interest. So much more appealing than a straight smooth shaft.
