There just some things that aren't going to be easy, and I think this is one of them.
Only thing I can think of is a weekly soak of the piece in a bucket of water with a bit of bleach added to it.

Lay a piece of Glad Press and Seal on the inside. Replace as necessary. Or tape over the holes with automotive green tape. Or lay in the Press and Seal, then go around the edges with tape.

In Hawaii we had to learn how to deal with mold. That thing your wife bought would end up in the trash really quick. You need to allow things to dry out or you’re going to get mold.

Dog or cat?
Wipe a pan after cooking bacon or whatever your cat likes, then put that in the holder.
When the cat knocks it off the counter or into the sink, problem solved.

that would break before getting a chance to grow mold in my house. no way im using 2 hands- one to not knock it over and one to grab the sponge- to grab or put back a sponge every time.

It will also attract bacteria. I wouldn't recommend it.
