It’s my birthday and I want a battery powered weed wacker.

You have one you’d recommend ?

I've had a Black & Decker 18v for about 10 years now and am happy with it. Just make sure you get at least 2 batteries if your yard is of any size bigger than a postage stamp.

I got this 56V EGo trimmer from Home Depot a few months ago. No complaints yet.

Bought the Ryobi 40 volt trimmer and blower combo, works great. Both pieces work better than expected.
The weed whip has the easiest loading string head I've ever used.

BOY - like the voltage amounts on those trimmers and the Li-Ion technology - I have a yard service now at my age but if 20 years younger would love to have those battery-powered tools - dragging electric cords around was a pain in my previous yard working days!  Dave

If you already have the battery platform, Milwaukee makes a trimmer for their M18 batteries.  Its a beast of a trimmer.

I bought a dewalt string trimmer on sale, maybe 2 years ago now?  It was $130.  Don't know if it's common to sell them for that price, but I thought it was pretty good with a 5ah battery

Oh well, the bare tool is $120 right now.

I really like it, one 5ah battery is about all my arms can take, and just about gets the yard done. Need to rig up a shoulder strap for it. When I had a gas trimmer, it was just too annoying to get it running. Nobody around here sells alcohol free gas, so you either have to buy fresh all the time or struggle trying to start the trimmer

I, too, had a gas trimmer that I struggled to keep running due to infrequent use.  I bought the Dewalt 40V trimmer, and I love it.  With the 4AH battery it will run for about 40 minutes, which is more than enough time to do my entire lawn.  With a 6AH battery it will run for about an hour.  It has just as much power as my gas trimmer had and is much lower maintenance.

I liked it so much I bought the Dewalt 40V leaf blower as well.  I hope they come out with more tools in the 40V line.  I think there is a hedge trimmer but I don't have a use for that.  I'd like a pole saw and a small roto tiller.

Can't speak to the battery trimmers; they simply won't do for my acreage.

However, one thing caught my eye on that EGo trimmer linked in an earlier response.  That's the easy-reload line head.  My Echo has one that's very similar and it's great.  In fact, I chose it over the Stihl for that reason, and I haven't been disappointed.
