Got any friends in eastern MT? Not sure if it will do but millions of Russian Olive trees were planted in shelter belts with many getting large enough to get small pieces of usable lumber. If it is pen turning or such look for an older tree that has struggled all those years and get some branch wood out of it. Beautiful wood.

If you don't mind traveling, there are a ton of olive groves in California. They trim and cull old trees every year. Mostly, they want to just dispose of the wood. If you can contact an olive farm, they may be willing to either let you haul off as much as you can or sell it to you for a nominal amount. You'd have to get it milled yourself, but it's dirt cheap.
