Oh, and other than getting a cataract fixed....Find out about that this coming Friday....meanwhile...had to clear off the bench, put 99% of the tools away...from this mess..
[attachment=47428]
To a bit cleaner bench..
[attachment=47429]
The grinder on the end of the bench?
[attachment=47430]
Was used to refresh the edges on all those tools....cloth wheel, green "Crayon"....The Unicorn method

I still have one plank of 1 x 6 x 5'
[attachment=47431]
Although it does have a split on one end...
[attachment=47432]
I MIGHT be able to rip the rip down about 1" narrower and work from there?

Other pieces from the pile of Leftovers...
[attachment=47433]
Some aren't too bad...three will need to be "fixed" up a bit...
[attachment=47434]
Maybe remove just the bad spots?

Thinking MAYBE a box using the plank for the 4 sides...then the others to form a lid....maybe stand things up like the Tea Cabinet....and stash a few tools in it?

Might try a "different" sort of corner joint....mitered dovetails?    We'll see..
BTW, that grinder has been replaced with...
[attachment=47435]
An IMP saw that also needs "refreshed"....dull teeth..8ppi, 26" length..

Stay tuned...

Took about 10-15 minutes to get the IMP sharp, and out of the way...cut that 5' of plank down a bit...
[attachment=47451]
Set up the rip fence to cut away that split...left the fence alone for a bit..
[attachment=47452]
Rough cuts..starting up....somewhere over 4" width..
[attachment=47453]
Some of these will be for the lid....including a raised panel...that I'll have to glue up..
[attachment=47454]
That strip on top?
Will be going right down the center...just need to joint a few edges first...
[attachment=47455]

As for the box itself?
[attachment=47456]
2 sides, and 2 ends..

Might even have enough for a smaller box?
[attachment=47457]
Sides for that one look a bit too thick...we have ways...

Will work on the lid panel first..the it's collar...then start on the box itself.....once I figure out the final size it needs to be..
Stay tuned..

Wednesday's Tasks:
Trim the part for the lid's Raised Panel to roughly all the same length, and work out how the grain will line up..
[attachment=47474]
Mark a "V" as to how the bottoms will line up....boards were a tad too thick for a lid's panel..so

Tablesaw to cut a kerf around the 2 wide parts....narrow center part was a "One Pass"...finish the wider resaws with a handsaw..
[attachment=47475]
Hand plane to both joint the edges, and flatten the sawn faces...
[attachment=47476]
Then spread some glue, moosh things back and forth until they "stick" add a few clamps..
[attachment=47477]
Vise lent a helping hand...and acted as a caul for that end of the panel....also cauls for the other end..

Checked the other face for any gaps..
[attachment=47478]
I also squared up the rest of the box parts' ends...
[attachment=47479]
And got them to rough length...One of the longer collar sides had a huge knot, right on the end....HAD...

Later today...I get the clamps removed, and the panel nice and flat.....might even start on raising it?    Goal is to do the lid first...then size the box to match..

Stay tuned...

Panel is out of the clamps....cleaned up the glue lines...flattened both faces....squared the ends....then made it a Raised Panel..
[attachment=47484]
Raised the field a bit above the beveled edges...

Set to work on a collar to house this panel in...
[attachment=47485]
Dry fit only..got 2 corners done....open the corners up?
[attachment=47486]
To show the dovetailed joints...(PITA to do)
[attachment=47487]
So...letting me and the shop cool down a while...might try to get the other 2 corners made?   Also need to set up the Stanley #45 to plough a groove, to house that panel in...MIGHT get interesting..trying to hold the collar parts still, long enough to plough the groove?

Stay tuned...(currently a SUNNY 87 degrees outside the windows)

Well, all 4 corners being done...
[attachment=47499]
Dry fitted...laid the panel in place..
[attachment=47500]
Will have to adjust the panel's size, once the grooves are ploughed..
[attachment=47501]
Checked the fit..went and got 3 out of 4 grooves done...another dry fit...better now, than when the glue is waiting..
[attachment=47502]
Panel seems to be a tad too long?   shorten both ends...refine the bevel a bit....got the 4th groove done..
[attachment=47503]
Close, but..not quite close enough...planed the edges to reduce the width a bit more...until things fit...then brush in some glue...add the clamps...
[attachment=47504]
Insert a square, and see how square this thing is...
[attachment=47505]
And pull until it is square...about an 1/8" out...

Letting this sit overnight....May start on the box itself, tomorrow?

Stay tuned...

Lid is out of the clamps..it was square at the corners...but had a twist to it...spent most of the hour's shop time getting things to lay flat...finally..
[attachment=47506]
Have in the vise to check the boxes 4 sides for length..and try to match the grain  a bit..
[attachment=47507]
Mark each for length...and get them cut..
[attachment=47508]
Jointed a few edges....was soaked clear through, decided to stop for the day...

Stay tuned..

2 hours in the shop...on a Monday?   Was just going to set up a few things..maybe doing a bit of lay outs...
[attachment=47525]
Like set this up, to do 4 rebates...
[attachment=47526]
On the ends of the longer side pieces...once I figured out which way the sides will face..
[attachment=47527]
Made sure the rebates were the right size..
[attachment=47528]
Also matched up the ends of the box...
[attachment=47529]
Figured out which end of which part goes together....then start to lay out some dovetail stuff...
[attachment=47530]
Figured this could be Corner #1?   Use this to lay out the matching half of the joint...
[attachment=47531]
That C clamp?   is to repair a split end..
[attachment=47532]
Try a dry fit?
[attachment=47533]
At this point, I already had 2 hours IN the shop...decided that was quite enough for a Monday
[attachment=47534]
Hung up the shop apron, grabbed the camera and the Mountain Dew Zero..and closed up shop.

Stay tuned..

All 4 corners are now done..dry fitted..
[attachment=47555]
So..time to get "Groovy"?

Jig #1....was trying to also set up an older plane...but..first was a small matter of edges needing jointed..
[attachment=47556]
so...
[attachment=47557]
Now that all 4 pieces match for width...
[attachment=47558]
NOW we can get down to grooves..maybe
[attachment=47559]
Jig #1...wasn't quite right...the Old Match Plough Plane?
[attachment=47560]
Iron too deep, and too dull for Ash...and...NO depth stop...went with the Stanley #45..
[attachment=47561]
Noodle maker?   Have to clear it, a few times...
[attachment=47562]
Just think, this is only about half the "noodles" it made...

Check for the alignment of the grooves..
[attachment=47563]
Then, cut and fit a 1/4" thick plywood panel for the box's bottom...
[attachment=47564]
Should be about ready to glue up?

Stay tuned..

Couple clamps for a dry run..
[attachment=47565]
And sit the lid on top, to see IF it still matches up...
[attachment=47566]
Seems to....take this all apart..track down the glue and a brush...
[attachment=47567]
And a "few" clamps...check for square..
[attachment=47568]
And let this sit overnight....

Thinking about some small trays for inside the box....so..
[attachment=47569]
These 1/4" thick slats might just work?

Stay tuned..

A look at the front/Latch face
[attachment=47571]
Turn the box around..to show the hinge side of things..
[attachment=47572]
Need to go on a B EE RR U N....as there is NONE in the fridge...

Will work on the box to lid fit, tomorrow....Sunday is out, new washer is to arrive...
