I am in the process of remodeling the first of three bathrooms.

I have a good deal of tile to rip up both on the wall and on the floor.  I was planning on getting a Makita demolition hammer (just over $400.00).

https://www.amazon.com/Makita-HM0870C-11...ion+hammer

I see I can get a pneumatic hammer chisel for about $40.00 (Dewalt):

https://www.amazon.com/DEWALT-DWMT70785-...tic+chisel

It requires 4.5 cfm compressor (more than my pancake compressor puts out).  I could buy a larger compressor and the air chisel for less than the Makita.

Can someone offer some guidance?

I did a bathroom and powder room a few years back. I got the cheapo HF demo hammer (about $120-130?) and it made easy work of the tile and cement board. Just looked and the models appear to have changed. The one I have uses nonstandard bits, but haven't needed to replace any yet.

I just went to the Harbor Freight site.  They show this for $129.00:

It got good reviews.

What bits should I buy (this comes with no bits, but it is a standard SDS mount)?

I have both wall tile (about 4" square) and floor tile (mosaic) to remove.  The wall tile is going to be replaced by wainscotting, so I am not too concerned about that, but the floor tile needs to be re-tiled so I want to get most of the mortar off.  Do I use a wide bladed to get the mortar off?  A narrow blade for the mosaic?  I have not a clue.

I have that HF one. I have a pointed bit, a narrow chisel bit and a wide bit - they came in a set. So far I haven't needed anything else. The tile I demoed with it I used the wide blade for everything.

The one I have came with both a wide (1 1/2 -2"?) and narrow (3/4 - 1"?) bit. I recall the small bit was fairly agressive, frequently digging into the plywood subfloor. I did use both....

There is a $15 combo bit that is likely durable enough on the same web page. Probably not good enough to bust up a driveway but for tilework it should be fine.

How much use are you going to have for a demo hammer in the future?  It's a single-purpose tool. A rotary hammer that can drill, chisel and scrape might be more useful around the house. This Bosch with a scaling chisel does a good job removing tile.

I don't know where you live but if you live in a busy place CL can provide you what you need used and you might be able to get what you paid for it on CL when you are done

I live 4 miles from a Harbor Freight store.  (Two miles from Lowes and Sears, and 3 miles from Home Depot), and zero miles from Amazon.com.

It used to be that Amazon was much cheaper than local stores, but Lowes and Home Depot seem to be matching pricing lately (without resorting to bargaining with them).

For your use I would get a HF hammer /drill.     The $89 -20% coupon, the one that is listed as 1 9/16" SDS drill.    This is the heavier SDS drill,  not the SDS MAX drill.  It will hammer only if you want.   For tile it will be plenty, not so much if you want to wreck out a sidewalk.   Roly
