how do you replace a drawer front?

Building a front behind the existing from and sawing off?  Won't that leave the ends of the sides exposed?  What am I missing?

Then you put another front on that covers the ends of the sides. A lot of drawers are built as a box and then the drawer front that shows is added. The house we sold I bought a kitchen off CL and the drawers were all done that way.
