Solid color stain can definitely peel just the same as paint if moisture gets behind the finish. That said, solid color stain is much longer lasting on wood than semi-transparent stain or paint. Caulk all joints/cracks/defects with a great caulk like Sashco Big Stretch then apply two coats of a quality solid color stain from SW or BM. Life of product is longer on unstained wood than prior stained wood. If prior stained wood is tip coated you can probably expect 6-10 years before degradation of finish.
Any free advice given is worth double price paid.
