I did the same trick with LED tapes. I ripped 1/4" thick oak strips, coated 'em with shellac to make 'em smooth then stuck the LED tapes to the oak strips. There are marks to cut 'em to length every few inches. You can get purpose built connectors, I used the smallest bullet connectors I could find. Using LED tapes produces a very even light, pucks produce pools of light, it depends on the effect you want. One neat aspect is that they're 12 volt and low amps - power supply is 2 amps - so there doesn't seem like much of a risk of shock or fire. LED dimmers were fairly new when I did this so used a 100 ohm wirewound resistor for dim. 3 position toggle switch and they've been fine for some years.
