Have to agree with Steve N about the edge guide, but when it comes to the router lift, I have an old WoodPeckers lift with a big PC router.   The combination has been serving me well for several years now.   The lift makes precise positioning of cutters a snap, well worth what ever I paid for it, long ago.

If you want to save some money, make your own edge guide. It's not that difficult and you could make it to suit your specific needs and most likely out of stuff you already have on hand.
