In 2018 the Supreme Court overturned an earlier ruling. Most notably:
- The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that states can require internet retailers to collect sales taxes, even if the merchant doesn’t have a physical presence there.
- If you reside in a state with sales taxes, you were already required to report and pay ‘use taxes’ on your web-based purchases.

Sales tax is collected in the states of Missouri, Pennsylvania, and Washington unless you have a valid tax-exempt certificate on file. Currently, online sellers are not required to charge their customers a sales tax on items purchased online. Of course, tax fillable forms can be found online, particularly at
https://pdfliner.com/form_w_9. Still, there are people who say that online tax rules are outdated, and the spread of Internet sales requires a leveling of the playing field between online retailers and brick-and-mortar businesses.
