The base was a bowl that I turned that I didn't like very much. When I finished the vase I looked over and saw it and thought, hmm...if I turn it over I can use it as a base. It wasn't planned and isn't necessary but I asked my wife and she likes it, for now, in the base.
You aren't the first to ask that question. The vase looks more elegant without the base.
