I couldn't find a mechanism long enough so the assembly & control nut is actually buried in the top half. The real crank knob with the nut on top is only the walnut ring and the one above it. The upper 8 layers screw onto the crank knob with brass male and female threads made from garden hose fittings. The upper 8 layers are the secret to getting the extra length.

The threads look like this. The thread rings were epoxied in such that the mating segmented rings are aligned correctly, making the threaded joint invisible.
