a few years ago, i made a cribbage board for my son and his wife using my existing board as a template. i milled a piece oak flooring (planed the curves off the bottom; comes out to about 5/8") to the same size as my board, taped them together and drilled through the holes in my board using the drill press (lots of holes, i tell ya).
then i made a box (same oak flooring) about the same size as the board to store two decks of cards and the pegs and used the board as the lid (hinged).
the pegs were wooden dowels i sharpened to a point using a standard pencil sharpener. sprayed some paint on them for contrast. (the pegs in the pictures are from my cribbage board)
