You will have to pull the splitter. The penny I mentioned is to protect the threads on the shaft from damage by the puller screw.

You might consider investing in a set like this. This is a Harbor Freight version. I overhauled and changed out hundreds of bearings while on a sub-tender in the Navy and a heavy duty set similar to this was our go to tool.
