I rather like it. The center piece helps the doors emphasize the vertical aspect of the cabinet, and it better suits the space. It's a large piece. Without the thoughtfully conceived design element, the cabinet would look almost monolithic, even with the panels.

I like that description. I'll have to repeat that to the customer if she decides she would rather have "regular" doors.
I've since heard that she asked her friend and neighbor, who's a woodworking friend of mine, to make wooden pulls for the doors. I take that as a sign they are staying.
