Scoony, I agree about hide glue being messy, and I can't seem to avoid getting out all over my hands, which make the mess worse. But it's easy to clean up with a paper towel and warm water. Plus, it doesn't stain the wood or interfere with finishes like PVA, epoxy and all the others.

Follow up. I decided to use T6000 adheasive and 18 ga brads. The 23 ga. were not going to be long enough and I didn't think they would provide much strength.
A nice thing about using the T6000 is you can apply it to a bunch of slats without worrying about it setting up since you actually have to let it set up a bit before applying the strips to the base. Also, the the strips don't slide around as they would with other adhesives. I am using a spacer for uniformity, but once a strip is laid down and pushed into place, it is not moving at all while nailing.
Here is one base just about finished. There will be another base just like this and they will be connected with 2 each 1.5" x 4" oak beams with 3/8" bolts. The table top will be attached to the beams, probably with wooden buttons fitted into slots on the beams.

That looks great!!! So glad I didn't have to do that. Sounds like T6000 is something I need to look into.
