I used cedar 2 x 4 for top and bottom rail. Pocket hole screws attach the rails to mahogany 4 x 4 posts that are attached to the floor joists.
Top rail is flat, and the bottom rail is on edge, with aluminum spindles in between.
6.5' span with no extra support
11' span has a 4x4 block under the bottom rail.
Anodized aluminum spindles are maintenance free. At .75" diameter sight lines thru the spindles is much better than wood spindles that are 1.5" thick.
