We use the Victor M325 mouse trap. You can't get any more basic of a trap. Unless there is a peanut allergy we use peanut butter as bait. Put lots of traps out, just a bit of bait on them. You don't need a lot. Set them for a hair trigger. In the average house we set traps at, we typically put 20 in the basement and 20 in the attic.

Yes, resurrecting this thread, but just for a new info source. This subject comes up from time to time.
I was researching the net for info on how to deal with rats...they've moved in under our chicken coop. Came across the a YouTube channel from a guy who seems very knowledgeable; he puts various rodent "solutions" to the test. Here's what he had to say about ultrasonic pest controls:

Other vids on the channel deal with various trap configurations, so if you have rodent issues, you may want to surf that channel.
