That FM50 TECO drive you mentioned is Nema 4X which means washdown and corrosion resistant. You don't need that rating unless you are going to use the lathe outside during an acid rainstorm.

Frank, thanks for the info and the offer. I will most probably be taking you up on the offer.

I'm pretty sure I want to go the route of sensorless. Of the two you linked to, one is only 2HP and the other is 3ph input. I want 3 HP max and need single phase input.

Also, having the braking and potentiometer built in really sounds good to me. I don't want to go thru all this, and then wish I had spent a few more more bucks for a capability that I want. Even if I spend $100 more than I needed to, at least I won't be wishing I had those extra features.

Programming whichever model I buy will be a challenge. From everything I've read about these, it seems the instruction manuals are the weak point....

Thanks again Tom, but do either of those support braking? I don't see it in the specs.

The CV-2003 seems to have everything else, though.

If your spindle does not have a good place to tighten down the chuck grub screw, you probably do not want more braking than you can provide with your hand on the handwheel.

Oops you're right. The links that TDKPE provided are the correct ones. You may have stated somewhere above but what advantage do you think (electronic) braking will give you? Electronic braking is very advantageous in some applications but I'm curious why you want it in this application. Anyway, the GS3 from Automationdirect has built-in braking.
