Bombe Secretary (picture heavy)

Sorry... nothing in the last few weeks.

I've had a bit of vacation with my family, out of town meetings, and weddings seem to be taking up my time.

I'm hoping to get into the shop this week.

Thanks for the interest guys. It's good to know you guys are excited to see this project come along.

I will certainly post pics of whatever I do.

AT LONG LAST!!!

I've finally gotten back to the shop. This summer was busy and I still have not adjusted to life and work as a parish priest but I really wanted to get back to work on this secretary.

I chopped the sockets for the dovetails in the top of the case. Here I had some marking errors so I covered them with blue tape and remarked with a knife. It worked great.

The dovetails together.

I have one large gap so I'm going to have to do some more undercutting of the joint and try to fill the gaps come time for the glue-up.

Here is the case together!

Before I scratched the profile bead on the case front I still need to trim the back of the case a bit. I couldn't do that as there was stuff going on it church this evening so I had to keep the noise down.

So I practiced scratching a bead in some scrap so that I'll be ready for when the time comes.

The Veritas beader is wonderful!!!

That was all for tonight.

Hopefully I'll be back into the shop more than once every three months

Thanks.
Peter

Looking good Peter. Awsome. I plan to start climbing my own Mt Everest in a week or so. I am going to start making a Pennsylvania 18th Century Secretary that was in FWW in 2002. My question is, do I need to use one of those 18th century TS that Dave mentioned in is post? Mine isn't quite that old.
Beautiful work sir.

Yikes, just when I thought I was getting brave enough to post a picture of something I've made. Patiently waiting for the finished project. Hope to be in your league someday.

Thanks Lawrence.

Here are the latest updates and photos.

I fixed the gap problem with my half-blind DTs. With some clamps they go together very tightly.

I also cut the 3/16" bead on the carcass sides today.

First I scratched the bead

Then I use a router plane to remove most of the waist. I left a shoulder on the outside of the carcass edge to match the height of the bead so that the router plane could balance.

This was not perfect for all the curves but with some tweaking and taking small shavings it got most of the material. A paring chisel and some scrapping finished it off nicely.

It's not perfect... but I'm happy.

The first side took about 2 hours and the second only 45 minutes. I'm getting faster

I wish I had gotten more done but again the church was being used so I couldn't fire up the bandsaw to cut out the shapes of the drawer dividers.

So next is to cut a 1/2" rabbit in the back of the case for the ship lapped back, cut the drawer dividers, cut matching beads in the drawer dividers, then some sliding dovetails to install the drawer dividers.

Lots more to come... stay tuned
Peter
