Dial-up friendly picture posting

Posting pictures directly in your post is nice, but in order to get acceptable loading times your pictures need to be few, small, or low-resolution (I try to keep my total size around 100k).

But what if you want to show off a high-resolution picture of your beautiful work? There is an option! You can create thumbnails for the viewer to click. The thumbnails load *very* quickly, and the user can make his own decision whether or not to click them.

I use Frontpage to create websites, and it has an "Auto-Thumbnail" option. You can also use your favorite photo editing software to resize your image. I find that 150 pixels wide works very well.

So here's how to do it:

My large and small images are here (yours will be at Photobucket.com, Imageshack.com, or wherever):

Now if I wanted to just insert the image, it would look like this (the code I wrote, then the result):

If I want to make a clickable hyperlink, it looks like this:

Note that the destination of the link is inside the "url=http://" part, and the stuff to display on screen is in between the "url" and "/url" tags. We use this to our advantage to create a clickable thumbnail image:

Notice how the large image is the target of the hyperlink, and the small image (inside the "img" tags so it shows on screen) is the thing to display in the hyperlink.

Well, sort of. The procedure I posted is kind of an "advanced version".

If you just want to post a picture, you still have to first put the picture somewhere on the Internet - that is not on your hard drive. There are "Photo hosting" sites available for free, with Photobucket.com being my favorite.

Once you know where your picture is located (there's a box on Photobucket you can cut and paste) you just press the 'Image' link below the box you're typing in and cut and paste the URL of your image in the box that pops up.

I can post a bunch of screenshots on how to do it if that would be helpful.

That would be great Joe, cause I have no idea what all that was about. Particularly the cut and paste stuff. I have never sucessfully 'cut and pasted' anything on the internet. Somewhere in world I'm sure there are pictures of my cat on someones computer that I cut and pasted because someone told me to do it. Didnt end up on my computer or theres, but I'm sure they are out there, somewhere.

Hi Joe, The problem with us computer illiterates is we also have dialup and usually give up waiting before we can complete the process. But it would be nice if more people reduced their photos . I very seldom wait for them to download so I usually don't get to see them.
