What to do with this alarm system...
#11
We had an ADT system installed 7-8 years ago.

We're in the middle of a slow-moving fairly extensive renovation, and the question came up what to do with the existing system, or a system in general. Have there been updates to home alarm systems that are worth looking into?

All the wiring is readily accessible at the moment, so making modifications to the system or wiring is easy. Just not sure what's out there or useful.

Add glass break sensors, add heat and smoke sensors, add motion dector(s). Probably need a zone extender. Maybe a new panel?

Is the system yours or still serviced and owned by ADT? I would upgrade to a new system.New systems can be accessed by smartphones.

The system is ours...I could replace it. Have any recommendations on new systems?

ADT offers has a lifetime warranty on their systems, they offer all types of options in regards to monitoring. They are highly rated. Call them up and see what they can offer.

I was hoping to DIY it instead. The police dept. does not respond to alarm calls in our city so really have no incentive to go with an alarm company.

Cameras.

Especially if the PD does not respond to alarms.

All the detectors in the world are useless if the PD never comes. You basically have no recourse if someone breaks in.

You have a recording, that is an entire different thing.

A Cloud based system yes... or the thieves will take the recorder too.

You can use your system as is with only the local siren. No thief stays in a home with the siren going. There`s also wireless systems on Ebay.

If you need all those sensors etc maybe it's time to look at moving somewhere with less crime.

Several folks in the office have been discussing security and safety monitoring systems. They seem to be zeroing in on the simplisafe system. (simplisafe.com)

This system does not require a landline telephone, and can be had with various levels of monitoring. The people in the office are trying to get away from higher-cost services like ADT, and the ancillary phone line costs.

Maybe somebody here has used the simplisafe system and can tell us their experience.
