do let anyone pee on your parade, it's a good thing when someone is recycling.
I use a razor knife, poke the tip through, leaving it in while the gas is released. then slice it open, push the cut down inside and dump it out. very easy.
I used them for boy scout craft projects. we made Christmas wreath door chines , used guitar strings, glass marbles, hot glue ,fishing line and screws. similar to this one. very fun projects
