Slow Build-Along, Small Cherry Chest

Isn't it nice when a family member (especially kids, in my opinion), asks for something from the woodshop?  Makes a guy feel useful.  Nice build-along, great use of what you have on hand, interesting technique.  Thanks!

Some commitments further along...

The carcase is glued together now at all 4 corners.  The Delrin door-hinge is in place and there is a magnet-catch inside the door.

I tried out some wrought nails on the bottom edges, through the rabbets, and didn't really like them.  They will stay there on the bottom for strength, but the top of the case won't receive any nails.

Here's the one L-N plane I have, doing the work of many other tools from time to time.  An excess protrusion was cleaned flush with little drama.  I have a piece of slick olive-wood on the fence-bar of this plane.

So frustrated with life's interruptions... I wanted to just "2x4 and nails" build the rest of this thing.

Well, a 2x4 was actually a good source of back-covering material, once I sliced it up to 1/3 of the original thickness.   A soft wood like this really does work well with a Kanna plane:

I've finally rough-joined the 3rd drawer, which is yet to be fitted exactly to the opening:

I went ahead and nailed the 2x4's to the back
.   I wonder what houses would look like if their studs were planed and oiled... with a bit of convex curve for the heck of it:

Thar she blows!   It's fully built and into finishing touches now.   The brass pulls give it a 'nautical' theme, I think

While attending to a domestic 'emergency,' I had miscut the last drawer's sides.... too short!  So I had to make up extra depth with a thicker back piece:

A really cool chest! You'll never find one like it unless you make another one, and it will still be different, somehow. That personal touch can't be duplicated in a factory, and means so much to the recipient.

Nice.  Getting more interested in "tansu" type designs and this looks like sort of a cross-over between tansu and mid-century modern.

Thanks All!

My niece has the chest now.   She lives a few miles from the Atlantic.  She is almost a "freegan" in lifestyle so she doesn't send digital pictures (if she did, I would post them!).   She told me she's going to store her newest passion, a garden seeds collection, in the drawers.

The comment about Tansu & mid-century-Modern is very appreciated.  I watched several videos about Tansu construction and I envy what they do within the constraints of that style.
