Only three colors are needed to match any color, black as a fourth is helpful but not essential.

There is one BIG variable that hasn't been mentioned in this thread -- the humans operating the paint tinting equipment.
The experience level of the sales folks at Ace or either of the big boxes varies greatly; "pro" stores have some advantage in reduced turnover but who knows anymore.
I just ordered 15 gallon of stain from the new Ace store in town because Lowe's is playing brand switch games again and local HD never has anyone around to answer questions.
In today's retail market you pay your money and take your chances.
