Kick plate
#11
For kitchen cabinets, 3 1/2" high for kick plate. That's to the bottom of the face frame -- is that correct? So the cabinet base is higher than 3 1/2" but is partially hidden by the bottom rail?

Thanks. Just want to be sure.

The standard is 4" or 4-1/2" by 3" deep.

Quote:The optimal height for a toe kick is 3 1/2 inches. Heights up to 4 inches are common. Increasing the height over 3 1/2 inches does not hurt the effectiveness of the toe kick it just takes away from your cabinet space. Heights less than 3 1/2 inches can cause some people problems.

3 1/2 is fine.  so is 4

I have made them as tall as 5 under special circumstances

In 30 years of building cabinets, the DESIGNED height has always been 4".

But because floors are never perfectly level, the ACTUAL toe kick height varies with the floor. I actually had one in the Caribbean that went from 3" to 5" over the span of a 14' entertainment center!

LIL thanks everyone -- much appreciated. What I just want to confirm is that the height is in reference to what? To the bottom edge of the face frame?

Thanks.

The kitchen I just finished had 4" toe kick box set on top of it

the reference generally is the clearance allowed at the lowest point of the face frame if there is one

I consider 3 1/2" clearance  as a minimum requirement that puts the top of the bottom rail at 4 1/2"  if you use a 1" bottom rail (typical)

Adjust your carcasses accordingly
