I've found on old wooden index file box works well for keeping the parts together.  The kind that were made of 1/4-in thick wood, had a hinged lid, and held 3x5 or 4x6 index cards.

I haven't tried this - my Stanley doweling jig is complete - but my local hardware store sells metal bushings that look like they might be suitable.
