I was in the shop today on a recreational tour and found these two shaves to play with. The Preston 1391 spokeshave is well known but they also made a skew version.
I always skew my spokeshave in use because it is easier. I guess the engineers at Preston wanted to save me and others the trouble and insert the skew at the factory.
Holding it on a scrap shows the 15 degree skew.
And we all know that skew planes leave delightful spiral shavings.
Of course, the regular 1391 also pulls nice shavings but without the spiral.
I guess this never caught on.
