Some glue impacted the degree of stain absorption. Sanding out is not an option.
Any tricks out there that could help?

Scrape or chisel out? Cover up with a glaze? Cover with tinted shellac?
Thanks, Curt

Careful in-painting of color in the affected area after sealing things down with some blonde shellac. Then seal down the in-painting. Then move on with the rest of the finishing schedule.
Alternatively, seal everything down and then go with a darker color in a gel-stain formulation, leaving it to nearly dry on the affected area. That makes it darker and may mask the boo-boo. Seal again and continue with finishing schedule.
