Deck joist overhang
#10
I have a deck, about 2 feet off the ground, we are replacing the deck boards and joists.
My question is, how far can I overhang the big beam with 2x8 joists
Thanks

I no longer build museums but don't want to change my name. My new job is a lot less stressful. Life is much better.

ok so riddle me this. the table in that link says with joists on 12" centers the cantilever is less than if the joists are on 2' centers? that doesn't really make sense.

I was thinking the same.   The only thing if the joist size changes between the 12" & 24" centers such as going from a 2x6 for 12" and 2x10 for 24" for the same loading I could see a difference in the bending of the joist.   Roly

Was just looking at that page and did anyone else notice the error? They have their joist width numbers transposed. The way they have it now you can over hang more if the spacing is 24"oc than if they are 12"oc... That's  backwards...
