Convert dowel jig to 'mortise pal'??

I was giving some thought to making a mortise pal style jig from scratch, but looking at some of the cheap self centering dowel jigs look like you could replace the center section with either an aluminum or polycarbonate block that could guide a router.

Has some one done this already?
